dress up the kitchen table. . .

I’ve had an idea for placemats in the back of my mind for a while, something to spruce up the kitchen table but still be functional. . .as the Janome (I really need to name, he/she/it) is still in the shop, my 2″ hexie templates arrived and that cute little charm pack of Kate Spain’s Cuzco looked a little bored sitting on the shelf I thought let’s give this a go!

Googling the “average size of placemats”, led me to think 14*20 should work.  I grabbed some wrapping paper, cut it out and determined that that was too large, I think that is for a ‘true’ multi-course place setting.

I ended up cutting it down to 12*18, although a perfect size for the mister and me, waaaaaay too big for the nippers – I cut their’s at 12*12, perfect for a plate and cup of milk.

I’ve arranged the hexies like so:

hexies arranged on the ‘mock’ placemats

I divvied up the charm pack. . .

and began the basting process. . .

I’ve taken the advice of various blogs, and rather than basting through the paper, I’m just stitching the fabric

basting is super quick when you use 2″ hexagons!

the bee approves 🙂

aren’t his green eyes gorgeous?

I have some really nice solids that go with the Cuzco line:

matching solids

but here is where my plan falters a little. . .the background.  I’m not sure, coloured cotton solids, or should I use a linen or even a faux linen looking fabric?  I have the following colours:

funny how the true linen (spread across the top), looks less linen-y than the fakes 🙂

I’d love to hear what you think, thanks!

p.s. once the background is determined, I’ll sandwich it, quilt it. . .I’m thinking diagonal lines evenly spaced. . .and then applique the hexies.  At least that’s the plan today – as with all things crafty, subject to change at a moments notice!

I like the middle grey that is folded. 🙂

Me too, the fake linen has so much more visual texture, so you think linen over coloured solids, eh? Thanks!

I love the way black makes things pop. So depending on how you feel about it, I would consider using it. Then use the same color as the solid center for the bindings? It would brighten up the black, too. Just my suggestion 🙂

I like the center matching the binding idea – thank you!

Looking forward to reading what's on your mind. . .
